The epithelium of airway is the ciliated epithelium and also has mucus-secreting specialized cells. Secreted mucus covers the internal wall of the airway retaining organisms and foreign particles which are then swept through the cilia of epithelium. In mucous ciliated epithelium of airway there exist intense activity of the immune system with antibodies and leukocytes inactivating and destroying foreign agents. Other defence mechanisms of the airway are sneezing and the coughing. They help in the elimination of solid and semi fluid particles such as pathologic residuals and accidentally aspired objects.
