The epithelium of airway is the ciliated epithelium and also has mucus-secreting specialized cells. Secreted mucus covers the internal wall of the airway retaining organisms and foreign particles which are then swept through the cilia of epithelium. Other defence mechanisms of the airway are sneezing and the coughing. They help in the elimination of solid and semi fluid particles such as pathologic residuals and accidentally aspired objects.
