The data unit made at the application layer is termed as a message; at the transport layer, the data unit created is termed either a segment or a user datagram. At network layer, the data unit made is termed as the datagram, at data link layer the datagram is encapsulated into a frame and lastly transmitted as signals all along the transmission media.
