Self pollination takes place when the pollen grains from the flowering plant fall in the pistils of same plant and hence, gametes from the same individual fuse to form the zygote. Cross pollination happens when the pollinators carry out the pollen grains from the plant in order to reach other individual plants of the same species hence gametes of different individuals form the zygote. As it supports, formation of the zygotes having the genes from the different individuals (new gene combinations) cross pollination contributes more towards the biological diversity.
