If the body encounters alkalosis the respiratory center  which is in the medulla receives the information and lowers the frequency of respiration. This reduction in the frequency of respiration may cause the retention of more carbon dioxide and in order to shift the equilibrium of the formation of bicarbonate towards the production of more hydrogen ions and thus the pH of the blood lowers.
