Concepts of resting potential
Explain concepts of the resting potential, action potential, and excitation threshold concerning the neurons?
Expert
Action potential refers to the maximum positive voltage level attained through neuron in the process of neuronal activation, about + 35 mV. The action potential triggers the process of depolarization of the neighboring regions of plasma membrane and therefore, the propagation of impulse all along the neuron. Resting potential refers to the voltage of the membrane when cell is not excited, around –70 mV. Excitation threshold is defined as the voltage level, around –50 mV, that initial depolarization should reach for action potential to be achieved.
