Poland elected a non-communist government in mid-1989. Czechoslovakia followed Poland. In October, Communist Chief of Germany resigned and the very next week a festive crowd of young people breached the Berlin Wall. In December, the dictator of Romania was murdered by anti-communist rebels. In April 1990, Hungary elected and anti-communist government. In a few months, a European order almost half a century old was in chaos. Gorbachev’s position in Soviet Union was shaken. Food shortages in cities led to protests and finally in 1991 the Soviet Union was dissolved and thus marked the collapse of communism.
