The climax stage is stage of ecological succession in that the community of the ecosystem becomes constant and doesn’t undergo significant alters. In climax community practically all ecological niches are explored and biodiversity is the greater probable. In this stage biomass, the photosynthesis rate and cellular respiration reach their maximum levels and therefore the net primary production (or NPP = organic material made by producers - organic material consumed in cellular respiration of producers) tends to zero. At the climax, the quantity of oxygen liberated by photosynthesis is practically equivalent to the oxygen consumed through respiration. (This is one more reason why it is wrong to say that the Amazon Rainforest, an ecosystem at climax stage, is ‘the lung’ of earth. Other reasons are lungs aren’t producers of oxygen; the algae as well as cyanobacteria of the phytoplankton are the major producers of the molecular oxygen of planet.)
