Platyhelminthes are classified into three groups: trematodes (Trematoda), turbellarians (Turbellaria), and cestodes (Cestoda).
Turbellarians are free living platyhelminthes and their major representative is the planaria (Dugesia tigrina). Trematodes are parasites, they live within a host and the schistosome (Schistosoma mansoni) which causes schistosomiasis is an illustration. Cestodes are parasites as well, they do not contain digestive tubes and their cells are nourished by the absorption of nutrients from host; their most admired representative are the beef and pork taenias (Taenia solium and Taenia saginata) which parasite humans.
