Functional classification of the nutrients is one which separates them into the structural, energetic and regulatory. Energetic nutrients are those which are used as energy source for metabolism; mostly they are the carbohydrates but proteins and fats may also be changed into the acetyl-CoA and ‘cycle’ the Krebs cycle. Structural nutrients are those which are used to support and structure of the cells and tissues; they are the amino acids which form the structural proteins, such as collagen, the cytoskeleton proteins, the membrane proteins, contractile proteins of the muscle tissue, and so on. Regulatory nutrients are those which constitute the enzymes and coenzymes of homeostasis, metabolites of osmotic and electrolytic equilibrium of the cells and hormones; some amino acids, mineral and vitamins salts are the part of this group.
