Bluetooth refers to the radio standard and the communications protocol which is primarily designed for the low power consumption, with the short range based around the low-cost transceiver microchip within each device. Bluetooth make these devices to communicate with one another when they are in the range. Devices use the radio communications system, so they do not have to be in the line of sight of each other, and may even be in other rooms, so long as received power is quite high enough.
