The main components of the plasma membrane are proteins, phospholipids and carbohydrates. The phospholipids, amphipathic molecules, are often organized in the membrane according to their polarity: two layers of phospholipids make the lipid bilayer with the polar portion of the phospholipids pointing to the external of the layer and the non-polar phospholipid chains in the internal.
