The three main cell types of osseous tissue are: osteoblasts, osteocytes and the osteoclasts.

Osteoblasts are recognized as bone-forming cells as they are the cells which secrete the proteinaceous portion of the bone matrix (that is, collagen, glycoproteins and proteoglycans). The bone matrix is an intercellular space where the mineral materials of the bones are deposited.

Osteocytes are distinguished mature osteoblasts formed subsequent to such cells are fully surrounded by the bone matrix. Osteocytes encompass the function of supporting the tissue. Osteoclasts are the huge multinucleate cells which remodelate the osseous tissue. They are originated from monocytes and they have many lisosomes. Osteoblasts secrete enzymes which digest the osseous matrix making canals all through the tissue.
