Relative to other, a solution can be hypotonic or hyposmotic, isotonic or isosmotic and hypertonic or hyperosmotic.
Whenever a solution is less concentrated than the other adjective hypotonic is given and the much concentrated is termed as hypertonic. Whenever two compared solutions contain similar concentration both obtain the adjective isotonic. Therefore this categorization makes sense merely for the comparison of solutions.
