The arterial blood which comes from the lungs to the left atrium passes to the left ventricle. The valve that exists between left ventricle and left atrium is the mitral valve, a bicuspid (two leaflets) valve. The mitral valve is significant as it prevents the regurgitation of the blood to the left atrium during systole ( refers to the contraction of ventricles).
