Scientific nomenclature of a species should have, at least, two names: one that categorizes it as genus and the other which identifies it as species. The name associated to genus is the first and should start in uppercase, the other following names should be written in lowercase.

In addition to this rule, scientific names of species should stand out and be written either in italics or underlined or still bolded or among quotation marks. For illustration, the scientific name of the human species is Homo sapiens, pointing that it belongs to the genus Homo.

Scientific nomenclature of species is significant as it universalizes the way to refer to a species making it simpler for people of distinct languages and cultures to understand one other. Similar species that contain very different names in different areas of the planet can be identified simply by their scientific binomial name.
