Whenever a source sends a packet to destination, this packet has a particular path or route it follows. Various routing protocols are employed to find the shortest path to the destination. The protocols sustain routing tables. Routing tables comprises of a set of rules employed to determine where such packets will travel. Whenever a packet is obtained, a network device checks the packet and matches it to the routing table entry giving the best match for its destination. The packet keeps hopping till it reaches its destination.
