Lipoproteins are the complexes which are made of the lipids (triglycerides and cholesterol) and proteins. The lipoproteins have different densities as per to the relationship between lipid quantities and their protein as lipids are less dense as compared to the proteins. Low-density lipoproteins (LDL) are those having a low protein/lipid relation; high-density lipoproteins (HDL) are having the high protein/lipid relation; Other group consists of the very low-density lipoproteins (VLDL) having very low protein/lipid relation.
LDL is generally called as “bad cholesterol” since it transports cholesterol from liver to tissues and Thus induces the formation of atheroma plaques in the blood vessels, The condition called as atherosclerosis which may lead to severe circulatory obstructions such as acute myocardial infarction, cerebrovascular accidents and thrombosis. HDL is called as “good cholesterol” as it carries cholesterol from tissues to the liver which is to be eliminated with the bile and elevation of HDL blood level decreases the risk of atherosclerosis.
