Endoplasmic reticulum (or ER) is just like a manufacturing plant, or like a factory, where lipids and proteins are made. This is as well where things are packaged in boxed and sent off to dissimilar places. In cell the smooth ER is a network of the membrane bound bodies which require ribosomes (molecules employed in protein synthesis) and its most important function is to alter, summarize and transport new synthesized lipids and proteins which will be exuded or remain in cytoplasm as membrane bound vesicles. The smooth ER can as well be compared to a highway, or lipid and protein highway.
