The substitution of a diseased organ by a transplant (i.e., healthy tissue or organ) is termed as transplantation. In the early 1940 Medawar described the nature of graft (i.e., transplant) rejection while working with burn patients of World War II. In his observations the following features were made apparent.

1. Graft of skin from one area of the body to other in similar patient was easily acknowledged,

2. Grafts acquired from close relatives like brother or sister, were discarded

3. Whenever a second graft was executed, by acquiring the tissue from similar donor, the rejection reaction happened with bigger intensity and speed.

The graft or transplant leads to several complications in the host body. They are mediated by the host’s immune response.
