The ovaries make the female sex hormones oestrogen and progesterone. The secretion of such hormones is controlled by follicle - stimulating hormone and lutenizing hormone that are formed by pituitary gland. Female sex hormones control sexual growth at puberty, the menstrual cycle and fertility.

Oestrogens:

These are steroidal hormones secreted by the theca interna of the ovum, corpus luteum, cells of graffian follicle, and placenta. Oestrogen hormone controls the expansion of accessory sex organ and secondary sexual characters. It controls menstrual cycle. Oestrogen encourages growth of ovarian follicles. Moreover it causes the growth of breasts and formation of melanin pigments.

Progesterone:

Progesterone is the main hormone secreted by the corpus luteum. It sets up the uterus for implantation of the fertilized ovum. It helps in the formation of placenta and for sustaining pregnancy. Further during pregnancy it restrains contraction of uterus. It also represses ovulation and menstruation in pregnancy.
